Spreading from a stalk outwards this crisp and flavourful leafy salad green grows to form a loose leafed bunch of greens with a decorative frilled edging.
Fresh leaves will be medium to dark-green in color blending to nearly white ribs or veins. Scratch the stalk and smell. A sweet or bitter smell means sweet or bitter flavor. Avoid product with thin, wilted leaves and brown spots near the stalk end. Another unfavourable characteristic is extremely solid, light-colored heads, which mean the bunch is all core and less taste
For up to five days, this lettuce may be sealed or wrapped securely in plastic or towel and placed in an airtight container to be kept in the coolest part of the refrigerator, generally located at the rear, lowest shelf.
Before using, wash thoroughly, using a salad spinner to get dry so that the dressing clings better. Tear into bite size pieces or shred for salads or sandwiches.
Along with crispy textured greens it provides a mellow tasting, attractive flare to a salad or sandwich. Another popular use is to adorn an arranged tray of vegetables, meats or fruits.
